John Rosenfeld is a natural teacher and quick to recognize the walls actors put up between themselves and their creativity. John provides actors with real techniques to book the job. Through exposure to many instructors over the years, John identified that many studios teach in an unrealistic bubble. John focuses on teaching the techniques that book the job and customizes his approach to the individual actor.
The cornerstone of John’s teaching is his firm belief that he can only demand from his actors what he demands of himself. Starting from the point of view that, “The walls you run into in your acting are the same walls you run into in your personal life.” John teaches that your growth as an actor will foster or coincide with growth in all aspects of your life.
John is keenly aware of all that gets in the way of an actor: performance anxiety, result-oriented thinking, and the inability to get back to your instincts — the very fabric of what makes everyone unique. John is committed to getting you to celebrate yourself, trust yourself and understand that in order to grow as an actor you must grow as an individual. This is his passion, his practice and his promise.
I first came to John having just moved from Sydney to LA. It had been 5 weeks, I was 18, I was living by myself and knew no one. John was the first coach I had gone to see and I had no idea the impact it would have on both my journey as an actor and a person.
I find it hard to write so narrowly about John and his work because my journey with him has been so much more than sessions with an acting coach. I found a rock in the middle of the tumultuous ocean known as L.A. Someone who was genuinely invested in my well being, craft and journey as an actor and the way they are all inextricably linked. Through peaks and troughs he continued to meet me where ever I was in my life, with an incredible warmth, generosity and insight. Whatever whim I wished to indulge - techniques, skills, inspirations and artists, he guided with specificity and the layers of exploration became synonymous with my own personal growth. John is the type of teacher if you’re willing to listen, be open and receptive he will give you his whole self. He treats each person just as they are, an individual, and turns a magnifying glass on the qualities that make you, you.
In JRS classes I found a refuge from the initial loneliness and a creative space where I was free to make mistakes and be unbridledly creative. When I wasn’t working it kept me focused on a greater theme than myself. It humbled me to be surrounded by people that truly loved what they were doing. We were there for each other as much as we were there for ourselves.
Since first meeting John and JRS, I have been living and working in and out of LA for 4 years now. In John I have found a friend, mentor, confidant and coach. I am ever grateful to be apart of this wonderful family.
Mary Elizabeth Ellis
Actor (Series Regular on THE GRINDER, IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA)John Rosenfeld is the rare kind of teacher that actually cares about his students’ success outside of class, listens to their questions with an open heart, and genuinely does his best to help them become the best actors they can be. It’s lovely to have a teacher that still not only auditions, but works. He is aware and sympathetic to the hardships we face as auditioning actors and applies his working knowledge to his coaching and class work. That is priceless… John pushed me to strip the b.s. that often comes with years of training and learn to trust that I am truly interesting and exciting enough to leave it at that. He has also helped me change my mindset and technicalities from the stage to the camera when I was just beginning. Actors from every background– from those with graduate degrees to the novice will be able to learn something new from John because of his personal teaching style, his enthusiasm, and his unique technique.
Its not just doing the work… actors must learn how to work. John has a brilliant acting mind and knows how to serve the material, but his gift is guiding you to your own voice. He will help you smooth out the wrinkles in your process and deepen your craft. John will get you results.
John Rosenfeld is a teacher who goes beyond just the acting work thats in front of him. The amount of insight and specificity he hones in on, with support, kindness and a sense of humor is always so spot on and eye opening. I have witnessed John's method of going deep into the psychology of each character being portrayed, and paralleling it to the actor, by bringing to surface how the actor can relate to the character in such a way that the performance becomes so alive and compelling to watch, and always with respect and music, so to speak, of the writer and genre. John helps in pinpointing and bringing awareness to our own physical bad habits that we find are psychological defense mechanisms. Because John Rosenfeld Studios is not only a study of acting but the human condition as well, I feel I have had major breakthroughs not only in my acting work but as a human being as well. This school goes deep in delving into script/ character work with support, thoroughness, specificity and always fun. Thank you, I am so grateful!
"I love The John Rosenfeld studio, with so many places to train in LA whether you're new to LA or a seasoned vet and I've been through the list! There's something for everyone at John Rosenfeld's. I really wanted to find a safe environment where I could further explore my craft as an artist and John Rosenfeld studio, is just that. It's open and friendly with a feeling that anything is possible. I wanted to be somewhere, where actors work and frequently book projects in all areas of the entertainment industry because nothing can grow in a field full of negativity. I needed somewhere that was safe, with 'auditors' and class didn't feel like a competitive performance space. I just wanted to work and better understand text and US audition processes as a Brit. Johns place is that. It surpasses expectation and if you've been through the ringer and are a little jaded by 'class' this really is an inspiring safe haven. I love the last minute coaching sessions for actors so you can coach on any and every audition if you choose too. There are no auditors, no strangers in the room, so you feel safe and able to focus on the work. it's not judgmental atmosphere at all and I love that the environment has an emphasis on creativity and personal growth within the acting craft. It comes with a feeling that booking projects is so very possible! Many studios can feel like a guru worship centre, lol, this place does not feel like that at all! The focus is always work, the growth and building a community that supports each other's growth. Whether that's having a classmate to do a last minute self tape or line reading, Johns studio promotes this and is unlike any studio in LA I've been too. I love that you get to work multiple times in a session you're not dat watching for weeks on end! You'll do exercises multiple times in a session as well as scene work which is so unique.
It's uplifting, open, safe and empowering. I recommend this Studio and my friends expectations have always been exceeded! Some studios can feel a little clique but not the Rosenfeld Studio, John looks at you as a whole person and helps create a safe and uplifting environment. I actually enjoy auditions and self tapes now!"
Actor (SERIES REGULAR ON AMERICAN CRIME)JRS was the first acting studio in LA that I stepped into and now there is no looking back! John and his TA's really know what there doing because they've all done it and are still doing it! Learning from working actors has catapulted me into one in only 6 months time! John has taught me so much more than acting and because of that I have not only grown as an actor but as a human being as well. John makes himself readily available to his students, which is unheard of at a lot of other studios in town. His commitment to his students and his drive to see us all succeed is unparalleled. As a young actor, he never treated me as if I were "young" he would push me like everyone else and that's what every actor needs; to be pushed! The beauty of it all is when he is pushing you to be the best you, it's done in the most safe and encouraging way. I can't imagine growing and learning in any other environment. The students, the teachers and John really make this acting studio an absolute JOY to come to class and PLAY. It doesn't get much better than this. JRS is the BEST!
Dylann Brander Casting Director (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, WRIGHT VS. WRONG, THE CLEANER, HAWTHORNE)John simply knows what he’s doing! He has a special ability to nurture his actors into to self-sufficient professionals. He knows what the writers’ want, but he also gets his actors to bring their special “thing” to their work. I recommend him to everyone– from the seasoned working actor to the novice. He really is the best.
Mo Mandel Actor, Stand-Up Comedian (Series Regular on STRANGE BREW and FREE AGENTS)I moved to LA and was able to get a lot of great auditions right away thanks to my stand up career. Unfortunately, I wasn’t booking any of these auditions and was quickly becoming worried that I might not have what it takes to be an actor. Luckily I found John Rosenfeld. He immediately identified what my weaknesses were and what about me was naturally funny, and tirelessly worked to help me bring these parts out in my acting. His instruction is very focused and he approaches everyone’s acting abilities on an individual basis, cultivating what is great and talented about each of his students and helping that part of them shine in the room. In less then a year and a half of working with John I have grown enormously in my understanding of what acting is all about and have just booked a lead role in a new sitcom for FOX by the creators of “Will and Grace,” and feel like the sky is the limit for where my career can go.
Tamera Mowry Actor (ROOMMATES)I took classes with John prior to my comeback to comedy television as an ADULT. Never before have I felt so prepared for my future roles as Hope on ABC FAMILY’s ROOMMATES and DANIELLE on Lifetime’s movie network DOUBLE WEDDING. TV has changed when I started acting as kid and so had I. I was now an ADULT actress unconsciously holding on to my outdated tricks. John taught me let go, and fly but most importantly not to ACT as the character but BECOME the character. To get so lost in the role you feel, breath, move, and think like the character herself. As a result of my work on ROOMMATES, I’m now getting into casting rooms that closed their doors before. Recently, I have had a Debra Zane request for Love Bites and have received an amazing complement from drama Californication and Defenders casting director, Felicia Fosano. Her words exactly, ” you are such an amazing actress and I’m so happy to finally get to see you ACTING for a change. So, thank you John for helping me fly and for ONCE enjoy the process of acting and auditioning. John would tell me, It’s all about the discovery of the role. Not waiting for the applause or response of how well you performed. It’s in this mindset I’ve learned I perform my BEST!!
Max Ehrich Actor (PREGNANCY PACT, TEAM SPITZ, QUINN-TUPLETS)I feel like I found the needle in the haystack finding John Rosenfeld. In the months that I have worked with John, I have learned so much as an artist and know that I have a great guide right behind me. I look at a scene and I see so much room for specificity and know exactly where to begin dissecting a scene. I will use them forever in my work…. Sitcoms are one thing that we really hit hardcore in John’s class (and it was the one thing) I had the least experience in. I remember doing a scene from “Scrubs” and struggling and struggling to get out of one hour drama mode and let it all GO. 3 months later I find myself working on a CBS sitcom pilot with Sarah Chalke from that very same scene in “Scrubs.” Coincidence? I think not. John Rosenfeld? I’m going to have to say thank you. John is also my primary coach. I have never walked out of there not feeling confident and ready to have fun and give a great performance. Moving out to LA at 18 in August was not the easiest thing to do with my family on the other side of the country, but I am blessed to say that I now have such a strong support system and fantastic teacher at John Rosenfeld Studios.
Brett Carducci Manager at Aligned EntertainmentWhenever I need fast results for my clients, I always send them to John. He is an amazing acting coach that has given my clients the tools to succeed time and time again. His energetic guidance has effectively encouraged each of my clients to audition and perform at their very best… John’s bold choices and awareness of the business have merited the kind of results with my clients that have kept me as a loyal supporter.
Blake Silver Actor/Director (THOR, BOYFRED)John is not for the faint-hearted. He calls it like he sees it. And frankly, how refreshing! He’ll help you identify your bad habits and break them. He’s excellent at crafting specificity in a performance. He won’t let you get away with crap. If you’re up for the challenge, then so is he.
Johann Urb Actor (EASTWICK, 2010, PORNSTAR)There is really no one who I trust more than John. He has such an amazing eye, and a HUGE heart. He knows that acting starts with your head-space. I think of him as a therapist/acting teacher- he can really see all the things that are blocking you from your creativity, and he knows how the remove the block. Love the guy!
Brandon Barash Actor (GENERAL HOSPITAL)John has been an x-factor for me in my career. He’s encouraged me to get out of my head and to “stop acting!” Anyone seriously considering a life in this wacky business would benefit from John’s guidance.
