A Tip-Filled Overview of Creating a New Accent for a Role (Fear Not!)

Taking on a new accent for a role is an exhilarating yet daunting challenge for many actors. Whether you’re stepping into the shoes of a British aristocrat or a New Yorker from Queens, adopting a new accent can add depth and authenticity to your character. However, it can also be intimidating, especially if you’ve never experimented with accents before.  Many think it is very hard, or impossible, to “fake an accent”. The good news is that with the right approach and dedication, anyone can learn to master an accent.

As acting coaches, we get the question all of the time. What are some tried-and-tested techniques which can help me take on a new accent?  How should I go about it? Here are five important tips to help you perfect your accent for the stage or screen.

1. Immerse Yourself in the Accent

The first step to mastering a new accent is to immerse yourself in it as much as possible. Surround yourself with authentic sources of the accent you’re trying to adopt. This could mean watching movies, TV shows, or interviews where the accent is spoken naturally. For example, if you’re working on a Southern American accent, listening to interviews with people from the region can be extremely beneficial. Pay attention to the rhythm, intonation, and specific sounds that define the accent. The more exposure you have, the more naturally the accent will start to feel.

2. Break Down the Sounds

Every accent has unique phonetic elements that set it apart. These could be specific vowel shifts, consonant changes, or intonation patterns. To master an accent, break it down into these smaller components. Focus on one element at a time. For instance, if you’re working on a British accent, you might start by perfecting the “Received Pronunciation” of certain vowels. Once you’ve nailed the vowels, move on to the consonants, and then to the overall melody of the accent. By dissecting the accent into manageable parts, you can build a solid foundation that leads to a convincing performance.

3. Practice with Native Speakers

One of the best ways to refine your accent is to practice with native speakers. Engaging in conversations with people who naturally speak with the accent you’re working on can provide invaluable feedback. They can point out subtle differences in pronunciation or intonation that you might not have noticed on your own. Additionally, speaking with native speakers helps you get used to the flow and rhythm of the accent in real-time conversation, which is essential for auditions and performances.

4. Use Visual and Physical Cues

Sometimes, connecting the sounds of an accent with visual or physical cues can make it easier to replicate. For example, some accents require different tongue placements or mouth shapes. Visualizing where your tongue should be or how your mouth should move can help reinforce the correct pronunciation. You might also find that adopting certain physical traits or mannerisms associated with the accent helps you stay in character. For instance, a certain posture or facial expression might help you maintain a regional accent more convincingly.

5. Record and Review Your Practice

Recording yourself as you practice the accent is a crucial step in the learning process. By listening back to your recordings, you can identify areas where your accent may falter or sound inconsistent. It also allows you to track your progress over time, giving you a clearer picture of how far you’ve come and what still needs improvement. Comparing your recordings to those of native speakers can highlight specific aspects that require more attention. The more you review and refine your accent, the more confident you’ll be in your performance.
