No class has helped me more in my growth as an actor than John Rosenfeld’s. I’ve never seen a teacher so genuinely invested in the growth and development of his students. He sees each of us as individuals with our own unique gifts, and he recognizes that we each have our own personal obstacles to overcome as actors. Also, John himself has been a working actor. He has a thorough understanding of what it means to be an artist in this business, and he approaches each class with this in mind. John is not your stereotypical acting teacher. He does not “perform” for his class. He knows a ton, but he does not claim to know everything. He is a man of great integrity. This is why I feel safe in his class, safe to experience the pains that come with real growth. Also, John always surprises me with his graciousness. He truly goes out of his way to help his students. How he finds the time, I don’t know. The guy really cares. I am so lucky to have found him. He is the best.

John was the first acting coach I worked with for a TV project and he is phenomenal. He knows how to connect with the actor and the writing to make sure everything is authentic. Also, John is so damn funny and he helps you get out of your head and just be. I would highly recommend working with him. You’ll walk away feeling prepared and full of confidence. Love him!!

John has made the world of self-taping so much more approachable! He creates a safe space to help you discover, play and connect to what’s on the page. He’s compassionate and meets you wherever you are at emotionally and mentally. I leave every session feeling confident about what we taped. Working with John is a joy!

I first came to John having just moved from Sydney to LA. John was the first coach I had gone to see, and I had no idea the impact it would have on both my journey as an actor and a person. John was genuinely invested in my well being, craft and journey as an actor and the way they are all inextricably linked. He continued to meet me whereever I was in my life, with an incredible warmth, generosity and insight. He guided with specificity and the layers of exploration became synonymous with my own personal growth. John is the type of teacher if you’re willing to listen, be open and receptive he will give you his whole self. He treats each person just as they are, an individual, and turns a magnifying glass on the qualities that make you, you. In JRS classes I found a refuge from the initial loneliness and a creative space where I was free to make mistakes and be unbridledly creative. Since first meeting John and JRS, I have been living and working in and out of LA for 4 years now. In John I have found a friend, mentor, confidant and coach. I am ever grateful to be apart of this wonderful family.

I was a broken man and a clueless actor when I met John and he put all the pieces of me back together so that I could actually go out into the world and work. John is a master. Listen to everything he says!

John said to me… “the way you look and your size… if you can be this big, strong guy who’s not afraid to be vulnerable and let people see that part, that’s an unstoppable combination. It will never not work. You just need to figure out how to be that”. And I thought of that, that struck me and I still remember it to this day. And I think I have a whole career built upon that model.

This Fool
John Rosenfeld is the only acting coach I’ll use. I first started working with John when preparing to shoot the pilot for This Fool. The experience went so well that John was my on-set acting coach during the filming of season 1 and 2 of This Fool. He taught me so much about acting and in the process I learned a lot about myself and what I’m capable of doing with dedication and time. Coming from the world of stand-up comedy John taught me how to break free of the habits I had as a stand-up comedian that I was bringing into my acting. It was through John that I fell in love with the craft and art of acting. I have also worked with some of the John Rosenfeld Studios’ acting coaches and they were incredibly helpful, thoughtful, and talented.”

I’ve always considered the phrase, “honing my craft” to be a collection of life experience, persistence, saying yes when it was easier to say no, and ultimately getting to a place where I trusted myself in the moment; every time. I feel like that’s so much of what acting is. Listening. And then just trusting. We’ve all got those traits in us, but you need that extra push, that second pair of eyes if you will. Someone who, over time, gets to know your strengths and makes you feel comfortable to want to grow. I’ve been taking class, and now one on one coaching, with John Rosenfeld and his staff for almost 7 years. In a profession with so much uncertainty, so much that’s out of your control, John Rosenfeld Studios helps you control the one thing you can; being prepared.

Mary Elizabeth Ellis

Actor

John Rosenfeld is the rare kind of teacher that actually cares about his students’ success outside of class, listens to their questions with an open heart, and genuinely does his best to help them become the best actors they can be. It’s lovely to have a teacher that still not only auditions, but works. He is aware and sympathetic to the hardships we face as auditioning actors and applies his working knowledge to his coaching and class work. That is priceless… John pushed me to strip the b.s. that often comes with years of training and learn to trust that I am truly interesting and exciting enough to leave it at that. He has also helped me change my mindset and technicalities from the stage to the camera when I was just beginning. Actors from every background– from those with graduate degrees to the novice will be able to learn something new from John because of his personal teaching style, his enthusiasm, and his unique technique.

I took classes with John prior to my comeback to comedy television as an adult. Never before have I felt so prepared for my future roles as Hope on ABC FAMILY’s ROOMMATES and DANIELLE on Lifetime’s movie network DOUBLE WEDDING. TV has changed when I started acting as kid and so had I. I was now an Adult actress unconsciously holding on to my outdated tricks. John taught me let go, and fly but most importantly not to ACT as the character but BECOME the character. To get so lost in the role you feel, breath, move, and think like the character herself. Thank you John for helping me fly and for ONCE enjoy the process of acting and auditioning. John would tell me, It’s all about the discovery of the role. Not waiting for the applause or response of how well you performed. It’s in this mindset I’ve learned I perform my BEST!!

I found John and his studio at the lowest point in my career. John immediately took me in, understood my plight and within a few months transformed my career. I had finally found an acting coach in LA that cared more about me than my money. He would never let me quit, even when I wanted to, and pushed me gently when I was scared. It’s because of him that I am represented by some of the elite industry firms. After that, I quickly landed a contract role on a great soap opera, multiple TV guest spots and films. His teachings’ kept me sharp, focused and the community he created in the studio kept me inspired. Every week I learn something new and I cannot recommend him enough to any actor who feels lost, or stagnant or just bored with their work. He’ll whip you into shape and push you, but then pat you on the back and let you know what a great job you’ve done. You’ll want to come back for more every week to learn, to be at a great studio with a true community of artists, and to be with a bonafide coach, John.

I started working with John in 2011. I thought I was just taking the class to continue to grow as an actor, but what I didn’t expect was to grow as a person. Through John’s unique teaching style he not only gave me techniques to use to help me be more specific as an actor, he also helped me open up and be more vulnerable. He helped me to truly focus on believing that I could actually have the career I said I wanted. He challenged me. He didn’t allow me to hide. My time working with John prepared me to be a working actor and I am forever grateful.

My career occupies two unquestionably distinct time periods: before I met John and after. His ability as a teacher allowed my work to grow by introducing me to what was missing in my acting. He taught me a fresh and effective way to approaching scene work, and instilled in me the importance acting as a business. John knows what it takes to be a working actor, and he’s who I turn to whenever I need help. He’s the best.

I credit John for equipping me to work on television. He has a true gift for analyzing scenes. His instincts are so sharp, and he always knows just the right questions to ask to quickly find your way into a story or character.

John teaches a really unique and efficient technique that helps you prepare quickly, and give casting what they’re looking for. It’s not just about committing to the moment, it’s so much more. The time I have spent with John has given me the tools I need to consistently show up and present myself as an option to producers. The last thing you want to do is consistently turn in unspecific auditions in the wrong genre. John makes sure that you’re always one of the smartest actors in the room. Couldn’t recommend him highly enough.

I was struggling to get a callback before I came to JRS. I left a working actor. John creates a wonderful community of coaches and artists, focusing on the tools you need to book jobs in an ever-changing marketplace. JRS took my acting to new heights and gave me the skills and confidence to compete at some of the highest levels in this industry. There’s no better feeling than booking a big role, one that can change your life or jumpstart a career, and John will help you get there.

Paula Patton

Mission Impossible 4, Precious, Deja Vu
I cannot recommend John enough. With John’s skilled instruction, I went from only getting callbacks to actually booking jobs. After having been in other acting classes, I remember being so impressed with what he taught us. I finally felt like I was given actual, real, tangible tools I could use to become a better actor. These were tools that could be applied to any material (comedy, drama, sitcom or film). What I learned from him about dissecting a script, I still use on every new job I begin. He taught me one of the most important and difficult things to learn, which was to be in the moment and not act. He pushes you to be your best and won’t settle for anything less. He is tough on his students but also incredibly caring. He wants you to succeed and will do anything in his power to help you obtain your goals. He worked tirelessly with me on many auditions and with his help I booked my first lead role in a film (Idlewild) and my second (Déjà Vu).

JRS has given me the knowledge, energy, and confidence to gauge an audition room and audition material. The studio gave me a work ethic I was able to implement seamlessly in an audition room, under the pressure of tests, etc. I was ready because I felt the same pressure and energy every night we worked material at the studio. JRS has given me a community that anchored me when I first moved to Los Angeles to stay motivated and focused. JRS is a not only an outlet to stay curious and sharp with material, but also a community to hold you accountable to have a life outside of this industry. Sooooooo – go go go and try JRS! It will push you and cultivate your abilities in this industry so by the time you are testing for a job and on set you really do feel comfortable and knowledgeable and if you don’t you have a whole community at JRS to pull from.

John was the perfect catalyst for me getting to where I am now. I had a grounding in craft but I needed PRACTICAL skills/ secrets to push me through to the top. And THANK YOU for your passion, everyday thank you. We never stop learning.

John is brilliant in a lot of ways. He nurtures actors both in their craft and in all that goes into pursuing their craft, and he does it without the slightest bit of condescension or intimidation you find with a lot of acting coaches. But what I’ve found to be truly unique about John is his ability to analyze who you are as a person and seamlessly integrate that with who you are as an actor. And that doesn’t mean he simply encourages you to play yourself. It means he forces you to use who you are to create nuanced, unique qualities in the characters you do play. The results and impact on my career have been immeasurable.

In 2013 I got recommended to go to JRS to try out a class, and I am so thankful I did. In 2014 Graham and Jeanette created a teen class and I was one of the first ones to join. This was the golden ticket, it was small at first but I found a way to be able to express myself, and really learn who I am as not only an actress but as a person. Going to these classes I learned how to be authentic with myself and how to really listen instead of just ‘learning the lines.’ After years of growing into my own and studying I started seeing a difference in my acting. Now I am working on networks such as, CBS (SEAL Team) & NETFLIX (A&K). I wouldn’t have been able to have been blessed with these opportunities if it wasn’t for being coached by such amazing people. Trust me, I get excited to go to classes because I become my truest, loudest, expressive self and I’m always ready to throw myself into a scene and be able to create magic.

Making the transition from theatre to film was tough, but JRS helped me transfer all my training from stage to film and made it all feel less overwhelming. Before JRS, I had booked a couple co-stars, but not long after taking Tool Shop and On-Going classes, I booked 11 episodes as a TOS Guest Star and my first feature film in one year. I found that that online classes helped me with my self-tape technique and in-person classes were exactly what I needed to prepare me to be on set. I tell all my friends about John and his amazing studio.

John is a really special teacher for a lot of reasons. For one, he truly loves the work. He’s crazy about it. That’s not really easy to find. Two, he genuinely loves actors and wants to see you be your unique best as an artist and a person. And then third, he’s got a very sharp eye, not just for genuine, truthful moments but also for the current state and trends of the medium and the industry. I can honestly say starting at JRS was a milestone moment in my career in terms of understanding how to bring myself to the marketplace and show the buyers what I could give to the story they were trying to tell. And then finally… he’s such a love-able weirdo! I mean really – go meet him real quick and tell me I’m wrong. I’ll wait.

When I first came to L.A. I was fresh out of a four year conservatory and not looking to be in another acting class. But when I started with John I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I was having in an acting class! John has a third eye and is able to really discern what it is about the actor that pops and makes them stand out from the other actors in their type. I was with another teacher before him that said “I don’t know what to do with you, you’re a great actor, but type wise I don’t know what to do”. John never seemed at a loss. He is patient and yet he doesn’t allow an actor to be lazy. He helped me strengthen what I already have in my belt and grow into a better actor with the more challenging roles. I recommend him to every actor I meet who is wanting to find a coach, take a class, learn more about the business, or find representation.

I hadn’t been in an acting class since college. I was under the assumption that if you had a degree, there was no reason to continue studying. (Actually I was just lazy.) When I met John, he immediately zeroed in on my habits. We all have them. Getting past them, or better yet, cultivating them to use them as an advantage is where John truly excels. This class has given me drive, confidence and an incredible support group of friends. There is no ego at John Rosenfeld Studios. That is what’s so lovely about working with John. He is there night after night discovering what works best for YOU. He helps you find your strengths, and work through your weaknesses. Without a God complex. Every week, we work on current, interesting pieces, with an open opportunity to bring in our own auditions. JRS is a gem, and I was lucky to find it.

Joining my class at John Rosenfeld’s Studios has honestly felt like I’ve been missing out on a part of my life I never knew I was missing, and now that I have it, I can’t live without it! I love the community it creates. Living on your own in a new country can feel very lonely at times but coming into Monday night classes reminds me of what it’s like to have a real family again. My favorite part of class is those unique, real moments that I honestly believed I would only be able to see or feel when watching movies at a cinema. Never in my wildest dreams did I believe I could have the same feeling while I’m in a scene of my own. I would wholeheartedly recommend other actors to John Rosenfeld Studios because it not only gives people a unique perspective into acting itself but it makes you feel like you have a safe place to play and make mistakes. So you can be completely committed to an acting job once you get it.

There’s something for everyone at John Rosenfeld’s. I really wanted to find a safe environment where I could further explore my craft as an artist and John Rosenfeld Studios is just that. It’s open and friendly with a feeling that anything is possible. I love the last minute coaching sessions for actors, so you can coach on any and every audition if you choose to. There are no auditors, so you feel safe and able to focus on the work. I love that the environment has an emphasis on creativity and personal growth within the acting craft. It comes with a feeling that booking projects is so very possible! The focus is always work, the growth and building a community that supports each other’s growth. Whether that’s having a classmate to do a last minute self tape or line reading, Johns studio promotes this and is unlike any studio in LA. I love that you get to work multiple times in a class session! It’s uplifting, open, safe and empowering. I recommend this Studio, and my friends expectations have always been exceeded! John looks at you as a whole person and helps create a safe and uplifting environment. I actually enjoy auditions and self tapes now!

The Kominsky Method, A Good Day to Die Hard

I became a working actor when I started studying with John. Upon meeting John, he made me quickly realize that I was investing my time and energy in all the wrong places and if I really wanted to be an actor, I needed to be willing to risk not having a day job so I could make acting my full-time career. So I took a leap of faith, quit all my other jobs, and started taking class with John. I struggled. I felt like I was doing terrible work. But throughout it all, John was there to be my teacher and my friend. He surrounded me with other actors that supported each other, and helped me build a structure for my work that regardless of whether or not I got the job, or lost the job, I had a home base to come back to. I am a working actor because John, his staff, and my classmates stood by me and helped me believe in myself and the work that I am capable of. John gave me the gift of lifting the weight of feeling like I had to do everything on my own and it has made all the difference.

John will push you. I repeat, John Rosenfeld will push you. If learning or growing or working on the things you aren’t so good at doesn’t sound appealing, then I would say he isn’t the right coach for you. When I got to John’s I was focused on working on what I wanted to work on. Which, if I’m being honest, was mainly the stuff I was already good at. John quickly changed the course of that ship. The moment John got me to stop looking at myself as an actor, but as a storyteller, is when it all changed for me. That shift changed how I approached material, my confidence level and most importantly, my ability to be consistently present in my work. One of the things I love about John, after having been at the studio for seven plus years, is he’ll still shoot me a random text once a year at like 1am to tell me how far I have come. I wish he would do it during business hours, but other than that, you gotta love how much he cares.

I can’t say enough about how much I appreciate John as an acting coach. He creates a safe, fun, and supportive environment to learn, play and sharpen my skills. No matter what the material, John is able to find something to be passionate about, and give it life. That is a gift, one that has inspired me greatly. The studio is a friendly and welcoming place where everyone is rooting for each for other. This positive environment and sense of community are invaluable. Simply put: I feel better when I am in class. John is also one of the only coaches I trust when it comes to comedy. He knows what is funny, and how to make it funnier. He has helped me get out my head, and back into having fun. I leave coaching and class actually looking forward to auditions. I highly recommend JRS to actors of all experience levels.

After only being in class at JRS for a little over two months, I can already say that being a part of this studio has changed the trajectory of both my career and my life. The entire studio is a vibrant community overflowing with positive energy, support, understanding and talent, while my specific class is filled with individuals who consistently inspire me to love working hard as an actress while exploring new sides of myself as a performer. As soon as I walk out of my Monday night class, I am already looking forward to the amazing discoveries and moments that the next week’s class will bring. Class is so much more than just a playground- it is a challenging, explorative environment dedicated to pushing through the mental barriers that often lead to fear or insecurity in an actor. Since beginning class, I have never felt more confident in myself or my craft, and I have never been more comfortable with the natural ups and downs of being an actress.

I love this class so much because it gives me an amazing opportunity to be myself entirely. I never feel pressured to put on a mask in front of my classmates. My favorite part of class is definitely scene work. I love getting to watch classmates and learn not only from the tips they get, but from the suggestions I’m given. This class has helped so much to improve my acting by keeping me engaged and thoughtful at all times, even when I’m not in class or auditioning. I am always thinking of ways my daily life relates to acting and how I can draw from experiences to help my passion grow. This class most definitely created a community for me. I now have an amazingly caring group of people who I know I can and always will be able to turn to whenever I need anything.

John Rosenfeld is a teacher who goes beyond just the acting work thats in front of him. The amount of insight and specificity he hones in on, with support, kindness and a sense of humor is always so spot on and eye opening. I have witnessed John’s method of going deep into the psychology of each character being portrayed, and paralleling it to the actor, by bringing to surface how the actor can relate to the character in such a way that the performance becomes so alive and compelling to watch, and always with respect and music, so to speak, of the writer and genre. John helps in pinpointing and bringing awareness to our own physical bad habits that we find are psychological defense mechanisms. Because John Rosenfeld Studios is not only a study of acting but the human condition as well, I feel I have had major breakthroughs not only in my acting work but as a human being as well. This school goes deep in delving into script/ character work with support, thoroughness, specificity and always fun. Thank you, I am so grateful!

I feel like I found the needle in the haystack finding John Rosenfeld. I have learned so much as an artist and know that I have a great guide right behind me. I look at a scene and I see so much room for specificity and know exactly where to begin dissecting a scene. Sitcoms are one thing that we really hit hardcore in John’s class and it was the one thing I had the least experience in. I remember doing a scene from “Scrubs” and struggling and struggling to get out of one hour drama mode and let it all GO. 3 months later I find myself working on a CBS sitcom pilot with Sarah Chalke from that very same scene in “Scrubs.” Coincidence? I think not. John Rosenfeld? I’m going to have to say thank you. John is also my primary coach. I have never walked out of there not feeling confident and ready to have fun and give a great performance. I am blessed to say that I now have such a strong support system and fantastic teacher at John Rosenfeld Studios.
