Mahershala Ali Actor (OSCAR WINNER)What I find so unique about JRS and in particular John, is his ability to meet you exactly where you’re at on your path, and make you better.
Randall Park Actor (Series Reg on FRESH OFF THE BOAT, YOUNG ROCK, WANDAVISION, Lead Role in THE INTERVIEW, VEEP, etc..)I’ve taken a lot of acting classes. Some have been good, others not so good. But no class has helped me more in my growth as an actor than John Rosenfeld’s. There are so many things that separate John from others that I’ve worked with. For one, John truly cares. I’ve never seen a teacher so genuinely invested in the growth and development of his students. He sees each of us as individuals with our own unique gifts, and he recognizes that we each have our own personal obstacles to overcome as actors. Also, John himself is a working actor. He has a thorough understanding of what it means to be an artist in this business, and he approaches each class with this in mind. He wants us to grow, because he wants us to work. He wants us to be successful. John is not your stereotypical acting teacher. He does not “perform” for his class. He knows a ton, but he does not claim to know everything. He is a man of great integrity. This is why I feel safe in his class, safe to experience the pains that come with real growth. Also, John always surprises me with his graciousness. He truly goes out of his way to help his students. How he finds the time, I don’t know. The guy really cares. I am so lucky to have found him. He is the best.
Alycia Debnam-Carey Actor (Series Regular on FEAR THE WALKING DEAD)
I first came to John having just moved from Sydney to LA. It had been 5 weeks, I was 18, I was living by myself and knew no one. John was the first coach I had gone to see and I had no idea the impact it would have on both my journey as an actor and a person.
I find it hard to write so narrowly about John and his work because my journey with him has been so much more than sessions with an acting coach. I found a rock in the middle of the tumultuous ocean known as L.A. Someone who was genuinely invested in my well being, craft and journey as an actor and the way they are all inextricably linked. Through peaks and troughs he continued to meet me where ever I was in my life, with an incredible warmth, generosity and insight. Whatever whim I wished to indulge - techniques, skills, inspirations and artists, he guided with specificity and the layers of exploration became synonymous with my own personal growth. John is the type of teacher if you’re willing to listen, be open and receptive he will give you his whole self. He treats each person just as they are, an individual, and turns a magnifying glass on the qualities that make you, you.
In JRS classes I found a refuge from the initial loneliness and a creative space where I was free to make mistakes and be unbridledly creative. When I wasn’t working it kept me focused on a greater theme than myself. It humbled me to be surrounded by people that truly loved what they were doing. We were there for each other as much as we were there for ourselves.
Since first meeting John and JRS, I have been living and working in and out of LA for 4 years now. In John I have found a friend, mentor, confidant and coach. I am ever grateful to be apart of this wonderful family.
Lindsey Morgan Actor (Series Reg on WALKER, THE 100, Emmy Nominated role on GENERAL HOSPITAL)I found John and his studio at the lowest point in my career. I was going nowhere fast, career-wise, and my own self worth had been obliterated by the industry. I felt lost, frustrated and most of all, confused. I knew I was in a bad place and I was desperate to get better, but didn’t know how! John immediately took me in, understood my plight and within a few months transformed my career. I call him my champion, because I had finally found an acting coach in LA that cared more about me than my money. He would never let me quit, even when I wanted to, and pushed me gently when I was scared. He believed in me and helped me to believe in myself. It’s because of him that I am represented by some of the elite industry firms. After that, I quickly landed a contract role on a great soap opera, multiple TV guest spots and films. Even while working on the soap, I kept attending class. His teachings’ kept me sharp, focused and the community he created in the studio kept me inspired. Every week I learn something new and I cannot recommend him enough to any actor who feels lost, or stagnant or just bored with their work. He’ll whip you into shape and push you, but then pat you on the back and let you know what a great job you’ve done. You’ll want to come back for more every week to learn, to be at a great studio with a true community of artists, and to be with a bonafide coach, John.
Paula Patton Actor (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4, PRECIOUS, DEJA VU)John is an amazing teacher. I cannot recommend him enough. He was one of the most significant influences on my career as an actress. When I started John’s class I had yet to book a single job. With his skilled instruction, I went from only getting callbacks to actually booking jobs. After having been in other acting classes, I remember being so impressed with what he taught us. I finally felt like I was given actual, real, tangible tools I could use to become a better actor. These were tools that could be applied to any material (comedy, drama, sitcom or film). What I learned from him about dissecting a script, I still use on every new job I begin. He taught me one of the most important and difficult things to learn, which was to be in the moment and not act. He pushes you to be your best and won’t settle for anything less. He is tough on his students but also incredibly caring. He wants you to succeed and will do anything in his power to help you obtain your goals. He worked tirelessly with me on many auditions and with his help I booked my first lead role in a film (Idlewild) and my second (Déjà Vu).
Josh McDermitt Actor (Series Reg on THE WALKING DEAD)John completely changed the way I approach auditions. My confidence was taken to an extreme level and my feedback went from ‘he’s good’ to ‘He’s GREAT!’ I stopped worrying about booking the job and instead focused on booking the room. I am forever grateful to John, Bethany, Patrick, and the rest of the gang at JRS.
Tracy Ifeachor Actor (Series Reg on QUANTICO, TREADSTONE, DC'S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW)
"I love The John Rosenfeld studio, with so many places to train in LA whether you're new to LA or a seasoned vet and I've been through the list! There's something for everyone at John Rosenfeld's. I really wanted to find a safe environment where I could further explore my craft as an artist and John Rosenfeld studio, is just that. It's open and friendly with a feeling that anything is possible. I wanted to be somewhere, where actors work and frequently book projects in all areas of the entertainment industry because nothing can grow in a field full of negativity. I needed somewhere that was safe, with 'auditors' and class didn't feel like a competitive performance space. I just wanted to work and better understand text and US audition processes as a Brit. Johns place is that. It surpasses expectation and if you've been through the ringer and are a little jaded by 'class' this really is an inspiring safe haven. I love the last minute coaching sessions for actors so you can coach on any and every audition if you choose too. There are no auditors, no strangers in the room, so you feel safe and able to focus on the work. it's not judgmental atmosphere at all and I love that the environment has an emphasis on creativity and personal growth within the acting craft. It comes with a feeling that booking projects is so very possible! Many studios can feel like a guru worship centre, lol, this place does not feel like that at all! The focus is always work, the growth and building a community that supports each other's growth. Whether that's having a classmate to do a last minute self tape or line reading, Johns studio promotes this and is unlike any studio in LA I've been too. I love that you get to work multiple times in a session you're not dat watching for weeks on end! You'll do exercises multiple times in a session as well as scene work which is so unique.
It's uplifting, open, safe and empowering. I recommend this Studio and my friends expectations have always been exceeded! Some studios can feel a little clique but not the Rosenfeld Studio, John looks at you as a whole person and helps create a safe and uplifting environment. I actually enjoy auditions and self tapes now!"
Mary Elizabeth Ellis
Actor (Series Regular on LODGE 49, IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA)John Rosenfeld is the rare kind of teacher that actually cares about his students’ success outside of class, listens to their questions with an open heart, and genuinely does his best to help them become the best actors they can be. It’s lovely to have a teacher that still not only auditions, but works. He is aware and sympathetic to the hardships we face as auditioning actors and applies his working knowledge to his coaching and class work. That is priceless… John pushed me to strip the b.s. that often comes with years of training and learn to trust that I am truly interesting and exciting enough to leave it at that. He has also helped me change my mindset and technicalities from the stage to the camera when I was just beginning. Actors from every background– from those with graduate degrees to the novice will be able to learn something new from John because of his personal teaching style, his enthusiasm, and his unique technique.
Brianne Howey Actor (Series Reg on GINNY & GEORGIA, BATWOMAN, DOLLFACE, THE PASSAGE)John has made the world of self-taping so much more approachable! He creates a safe space to help you discover, play and connect to what’s on the page. He’s compassionate and meets you wherever you are at emotionally and mentally. I leave every session feeling confident about what we taped. Working with John is a joy!
Blake Lee Actor (Series Reg on CRUEL SUMMER, FAM, MIXOLOGY)Training with John changed everything for me. I hadn’t been in an acting class in a few years and I was really hesitant to start again, but I immediately felt safe with John. He has this unique ability to break down a script and help you go so much deeper into a character. Since starting class with John I have tested and booked numerous times and it has everything to do with him. I now go into auditions always feeling so prepared and actually having fun. John is an outstanding acting coach who truly cares for his students. He will make you a better actor!
Teddy Sears Actor (Series Reg on CHICAGO FIRE, AMERICAN HORROR STORY, THE FLASH, Etc)My career occupies two unquestionably distinct time periods: before I met John and after. His ability as a teacher allowed my work to grow by introducing me to what was missing in my acting. He taught me a fresh and effective way to approaching scene work, and instilled in me the importance acting as a business. John knows what it takes to be a working actor, and he’s who I turn to whenever I need help. He’s the best.
Series Regular on INSATIABLE, Recurring on BIG LITTLE LIES, GIRLBOSS and ARRESTED DEVELOPMENTJRS has meant more to me than I can say. The studio and its community saved my relationship to auditioning when I was starting to feel cynical and, god forbid, bored.
Adam Ray Actor, Stand-Up Comedian (THE HEAT, YOUNG ROCK)I’ve always considered the phrase “honing my craft” to be a collection of life experience, persistence, saying yes when it is easier to say no, and ultimately getting to a place where I trust myself in the moment; every time. I feel like that is so much of what acting is. Listening. And then just trusting. We all have it in us, but sometimes you need that extra push and second pair of eyes. Someone who, over time, gets to know your strengths and makes you feel comfortable and want to grow. John does that for me. I’ve been taking class and one-on-one coaching with John and his staff for almost 7 years. In a profession with so much uncertainty, so much that’s out of your control, John Rosenfeld Studios helps you be in control of the one thing you can: being prepared.
Dylann Brander Casting Director (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, WRIGHT VS. WRONG, THE CLEANER, HAWTHORNE)John simply knows what he’s doing! He has a special ability to nurture his actors into to self-sufficient professionals. He knows what the writers’ want, but he also gets his actors to bring their special “thing” to their work. I recommend him to everyone– from the seasoned working actor to the novice. He really is the best.
Actor (Series Reg on JETT, GET SHORTY)John made acting fun for me again. I’d consistently leave his classes buzzing with joy, vibrating with excitement like a kid at camp. So rare to find a teacher give so much and care so deeply. And the community he fosters here at JRS reflect the same heart. It’s a really special place.
Max Ehrich Actor (Series Reg on AMERICAN PRINCESS, SWEET/VICIOUS)I feel like I found the needle in the haystack finding John Rosenfeld. In the months that I have worked with John, I have learned so much as an artist and know that I have a great guide right behind me. I look at a scene and I see so much room for specificity and know exactly where to begin dissecting a scene. I will use them forever in my work…. Sitcoms are one thing that we really hit hardcore in John’s class (and it was the one thing) I had the least experience in. I remember doing a scene from “Scrubs” and struggling and struggling to get out of one hour drama mode and let it all GO. 3 months later I find myself working on a CBS sitcom pilot with Sarah Chalke from that very same scene in “Scrubs.” Coincidence? I think not. John Rosenfeld? I’m going to have to say thank you. John is also my primary coach. I have never walked out of there not feeling confident and ready to have fun and give a great performance. Moving out to LA at 18 in August was not the easiest thing to do with my family on the other side of the country, but I am blessed to say that I now have such a strong support system and fantastic teacher at John Rosenfeld Studios.
David Lim Actor (Series Reg on S.W.A.T., QUANTICO)I was struggling to get a callback before I came to JRS. I left a working actor. John creates a wonderful community of coaches and artists, focusing on the tools you need to book jobs in an ever-changing marketplace. JRS took my acting to new heights and gave me the skills and confidence to compete at some of the highest levels in this industry. There's no better feeling than booking a big role, one that can change your life or jumpstart a career, and John will help you get there.
Tamera Mowry-Housley Actor (ROOMMATES)I took classes with John prior to my comeback to comedy television as an ADULT. Never before have I felt so prepared for my future roles as Hope on ABC FAMILY’s ROOMMATES and DANIELLE on Lifetime’s movie network DOUBLE WEDDING. TV has changed when I started acting as kid and so had I. I was now an ADULT actress unconsciously holding on to my outdated tricks. John taught me let go, and fly but most importantly not to ACT as the character but BECOME the character. To get so lost in the role you feel, breath, move, and think like the character herself. As a result of my work on ROOMMATES, I’m now getting into casting rooms that closed their doors before. Recently, I have had a Debra Zane request for Love Bites and have received an amazing complement from drama Californication and Defenders casting director, Felicia Fosano. Her words exactly, ” you are such an amazing actress and I’m so happy to finally get to see you ACTING for a change. So, thank you John for helping me fly and for ONCE enjoy the process of acting and auditioning. John would tell me, It’s all about the discovery of the role. Not waiting for the applause or response of how well you performed. It’s in this mindset I’ve learned I perform my BEST!!
Dawan Owens Actor (Series Reg on All Night)"John will push you. I repeat, John Rosenfeld will push you. If learning or growing or working on the things you aren’t so good at doesn’t sound appealing, then I would say he isn’t the right coach for you. When I got to John’s I was focused on working on what I wanted to work on. Which, if I’m being honest, was mainly the stuff I was already good at. John quickly changed the course of that ship. The moment John got me to stop looking at myself as an actor, but as a storyteller, is when it all changed for me. That shift changed how I approached material, my confidence level and most importantly, my ability to be consistently present in my work. All the things that were holding me back from doing the type of work I knew I was capable of seemed to start to fade. One of the things I love about John, after been at the studio for seven plus years, is he’ll still shoot me a random text once a year at like 1am to tell me how far I have come. I wish he would do it during business hours, but other than that, you gotta love how much he cares."
Steven Krueger Actor (Recurring on THE ORIGINALS, YELLOWJACKETS, ROSWELL NEW MEXICO)John is brilliant in a lot of ways. He nurtures actors both in their craft and in all that goes into pursuing their craft, and he does it without the slightest bit of condescension or intimidation you find with a lot of acting coaches. But what I’ve found to be truly unique about John is his ability to analyze who you are as a person and seamlessly integrate that with who you are as an actor. And that doesn’t mean he simply encourages you to play yourself. It means he forces you to use who you are to create nuanced, unique qualities in the characters you do play. The results and impact on my career have been immeasurable.
Actor (Series Reg on THE GOOD DOCTOR, KEVIN FROM WORK)JRS has given me the knowledge, energy, and confidence to gauge an audition room and audition material. The studio gave me a work ethic I was able to implement seamlessly in an audition room, under the pressure of tests, etc. I was ready because I felt the same pressure and energy every night we worked material at the studio. JRS has given me a community that anchored me when I first moved to Los Angeles to stay motivated and focused. It’s been so helpful to be able to bounce ideas around with like-minded people when I felt a bit overwhelmed with learning the industry. JRS is a not only an outlet to stay curious and sharp with material and create your own material, but also a community to hold you accountable to have a life outside of this industry. Most importantly JRS gave me my best friend (shout out Kelly Walker). Sooooooo - go go go and try JRS! It will push you and cultivate your abilities in this industry so by the time you are testing for a job and on set you really do feel comfortable and knowledgeable and if you don't you have a whole community at JRS to pull from.
Rick Cosnett Actor (Series Reg on THE FLASH, VAMPIRE DIARIES)John was the perfect catalyst for me getting to where I am now. I had a grounding in craft but I needed PRACTICAL skills/ secrets to push me through to the top. These were imperative and made all the difference. I can’t recommend his studio enough especially for actors wanting to get to the next level in Los Angeles. Priceless. Listen to them! And THANK YOU for your passion, everyday, thank you! We never stop learning.
Actor (SERIES REGULAR ON AMERICAN CRIME)JRS was the first acting studio in LA that I stepped into and now there is no looking back! John and his TA's really know what there doing because they've all done it and are still doing it! Learning from working actors has catapulted me into one in only 6 months time! John has taught me so much more than acting and because of that I have not only grown as an actor but as a human being as well. John makes himself readily available to his students, which is unheard of at a lot of other studios in town. His commitment to his students and his drive to see us all succeed is unparalleled. As a young actor, he never treated me as if I were "young" he would push me like everyone else and that's what every actor needs; to be pushed! The beauty of it all is when he is pushing you to be the best you, it's done in the most safe and encouraging way. I can't imagine growing and learning in any other environment. The students, the teachers and John really make this acting studio an absolute JOY to come to class and PLAY. It doesn't get much better than this. JRS is the BEST!
Amanda Walsh Actor (Series Reg on SONS AND DAUGHTERS, DANNI LOWINSKI, Etc.)I can’t say enough about how much I appreciate John as an acting coach. He creates a safe, fun, and supportive environment to learn, play and sharpen my skills. No matter what the material, John is able to find something to be passionate about, and give it life. That is a gift, one that has inspired me greatly. The studio is a friendly and welcoming place where everyone is rooting for each for other. This positive environment and sense of community are invaluable. Simply put: I feel better when I am in class. John is also one of the only coaches I trust when it comes to comedy. He knows what is funny, and how to make it funnier. He has helped me get out my head, and back into having fun. I leave coaching and class actually looking forward to auditions. I highly recommend JRS to actors of all experience levels.
Actor (Recurring on SILICON VALLEY)John cultivates a truly encouraging environment for his students; one where I’ve felt safe to take risks, make mistakes, and find my voice as an artist. I’m so grateful for the community I’ve found in JRS. Class with John has completely transformed how I approach auditioning by helping me identify and strengthen tools I didn’t know I possessed. I can’t recommend John Rosenfeld Studios enough.
Mo Mandel Actor, Stand-Up Comedian (Series Regular on STRANGE BREW and FREE AGENTS)I moved to LA and was able to get a lot of great auditions right away thanks to my stand up career. Unfortunately, I wasn’t booking any of these auditions and was quickly becoming worried that I might not have what it takes to be an actor. Luckily I found John Rosenfeld. He immediately identified what my weaknesses were and what about me was naturally funny, and tirelessly worked to help me bring these parts out in my acting. His instruction is very focused and he approaches everyone’s acting abilities on an individual basis, cultivating what is great and talented about each of his students and helping that part of them shine in the room. In less then a year and a half of working with John I have grown enormously in my understanding of what acting is all about and have just booked a lead role in a new sitcom for FOX by the creators of “Will and Grace,” and feel like the sky is the limit for where my career can go.
Brandon Barash Actor (DAYS OF OUR LIVES, GENERAL HOSPITAL)John has been an x-factor for me in my career. He’s encouraged me to get out of my head and to “stop acting!” Anyone seriously considering a life in this wacky business would benefit from John’s guidance.
Lynn Chen Actor (Recurring on SHAMELESS, THE AFFAIR, ALL MY CHILDREN)I often joke that John's class is "How Lynn got her groove back," but it's true. Before taking his class, I was burnt out from decades of auditioning and acting classes that made me feel like I wasn't enough. Even though I was working, I still felt like my life was at the whim of others' opinions and decisions. It didn't happen overnight, but I was able to find self-validation through my work, which gave me not only the confidence to be proud of my decisions in the audition room and on set, but also behind the camera. This past year, I directed my first feature film - which I also wrote, produced, and starred in - and I don't think I could have done that without the new foundation that John helped me build.
Johann Urb Actor (ARROW, PANDORA, 2010, Etc.)There is really no one who I trust more than John. He has such an amazing eye, and a HUGE heart. He knows that acting starts with your head-space. I think of him as a therapist/acting teacher- he can really see all the things that are blocking you from your creativity, and he knows how the remove the block. Love the guy!
Kim Shaw Actor (Series Regular on I JUST WANT MY PANTS BACK)I hadn’t been in an acting class since college. I was under the assumption that if you had a degree, there was no reason to continue studying. Actually I was just lazy. When I met John, he immediately zeroed in on my habits. We all have them. Getting past them, or better yet, cultivating them to use them as an advantage is where John truly excels. This class has given me drive, confidence and an incredible support group of friends. There is no ego at John Rosenfeld Studios. That is what’s so lovely about working with John. He is there night after night discovering what works best for YOU. He helps you find your strengths, and work through your weaknesses. Without a God complex. Every week, we work on current, interesting pieces, with an open opportunity to bring in our own auditions. JRS is a gem, and I was lucky to find it.
Actor (Series Regular on BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL)When I first came to L.A. I was fresh out of a four year conservatory and not looking to be in another acting class. But when I started with John I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I was having in an acting class! John has a third eye and is able to really discern what it is about the actor that pops and makes them stand out from the other actors in their type. I was with another teacher before him that said “I don’t know what to do with you, you’re a great actor, but type wise I don’t know what to do”. John never seemed at a loss. He is patient and yet he doesn’t allow an actor to be lazy. He helped me strengthen what I already have in my belt and grow into a better actor with the more challenging roles. I recommend him to every actor I meet who is wanting to find a coach, take a class, learn more about the business, or find representation.
Michael Roark Actor
Its not just doing the work… actors must learn how to work. John has a brilliant acting mind and knows how to serve the material, but his gift is guiding you to your own voice. He will help you smooth out the wrinkles in your process and deepen your craft. John will get you results.
Amanda Jane Cooper Actor (Roles on MASTERS OF SEX, HELLO LADIES, WICKED)John Rosenfeld is one of LA’s most gifted and generous teachers, passionate about what he does and more importantly, about what you do. I’m very grateful to this studio for its loving and supportive community.
Melissa Tang Actor (Series Regular on KOMINSKY METHOD, GOODWIN GAMES)I became a working actor when I started studying with John. Before meeting John, I had gone to conservatory for formal acting training, worked for years in casting, worked for a producer at a studio and thought because I had so much experience working in so many facets of the industry, there was no need to get MORE training in an acting class. But while I was working all these other jobs, I stopped practicing my craft and I was torn between wanting to pursue my acting, and feeling the responsibility to do well in my survival jobs. Upon meeting John, he made me quickly realize that I was investing my time and energy in all the wrong places and if I really wanted to be an actor, I needed to be willing to risk not having a day job so I could make acting my full-time career. So I took a leap of faith, quit all my other jobs, and started taking class with John. I struggled. I cried. I felt like I was doing terrible work. But throughout it all, John was there to be my teacher and my friend. He surrounded me with other actors that supported each other, and helped me build a structure for my work that regardless of whether or not I got the job, or lost the job, I had a home base to come back to. I am a working actor because John, his staff, and my classmates stood by me and helped me believe in myself and the work that I am capable of. John gave me the gift of lifting the weight of feeling like I had to do everything on my own and it has made all the difference.
Jon Beavers Actor (Series Reg on ANIMAL KINGDOM, THE LONG ROAD HOME)John is a really special teacher for a lot of reasons. For one, he truly loves the work. He’s crazy about it. That’s not really easy to find. Two, he genuinely loves actors and wants to see you be your unique best as an artist and a person. And then third, he’s got a very sharp eye, not just for genuine, truthful moments but also for the current state and trends of the medium and the industry. I can honestly say starting at JRS was a milestone moment in my career in terms of understanding how to bring myself to the marketplace and show the buyers what I could give to the story they were trying to tell. And then finally... he’s such a love-able weirdo! I mean really - go meet him real quick and tell me I’m wrong. I’ll wait.
Angela Gots Actor (Recurring on MADAM SECRETARY)
John Rosenfeld is a teacher who goes beyond just the acting work thats in front of him. The amount of insight and specificity he hones in on, with support, kindness and a sense of humor is always so spot on and eye opening. I have witnessed John's method of going deep into the psychology of each character being portrayed, and paralleling it to the actor, by bringing to surface how the actor can relate to the character in such a way that the performance becomes so alive and compelling to watch, and always with respect and music, so to speak, of the writer and genre. John helps in pinpointing and bringing awareness to our own physical bad habits that we find are psychological defense mechanisms. Because John Rosenfeld Studios is not only a study of acting but the human condition as well, I feel I have had major breakthroughs not only in my acting work but as a human being as well. This school goes deep in delving into script/ character work with support, thoroughness, specificity and always fun. Thank you, I am so grateful!
Brett Carducci Manager at Aligned EntertainmentWhenever I need fast results for my clients, I always send them to John. He is an amazing acting coach that has given my clients the tools to succeed time and time again. His energetic guidance has effectively encouraged each of my clients to audition and perform at their very best… John’s bold choices and awareness of the business have merited the kind of results with my clients that have kept me as a loyal supporter.
